Sun Safety with Rory Sutherland
Healthy LifeCycles -- UHC TV
Welcome to Healthy Life Cycles. A video series provided to UnitedHealthcare members, on a monthly basis, to support the organization’s mission to help people live healthier lives.
Hi, I’m Rory Sutherland. As a rider, I am constantly outdoors so I spend a lot of time thinking about my skin. Your skin is the largest organ in the human body and it’s particularly susceptible to dangers, including skin cancer. Learn how you can protect yourself.
Why is sun exposure bad? Even a little sun exposure can damage your skin. UV rays can cause sunspots, freckles, and wrinkles. The sun also causes melanoma, the most common type of skin cancer that affects more than 2 million people each year. Tanning beds are no safer than the sun. They expose you to the same harmful rays and same risk for cancer.
How can I protect my skin? The best protection of all is not going outdoors during the peak hours of 10 am to 4 pm. The next best thing is being smart and knowing the appropriate level of coverage you will need. Clothing is your best protection from the sun. When you are out in the sun, slather yourself with sunscreen. Make sure it’s at least SPF 15. Apply it about 20 minutes before your activity and reapply it every two hours, even on cloudy days and especially if you have been swimming or sweating. Think of sunglasses as powerful sunscreen for your eyes. For extra coverage put on a wide-brimmed hat.
Consult your physician if you have any concerns about skin cancer, the effectiveness of sunscreen and other steps you can take to help protect you and your family from the sun’s harmful rays. Consult your doctor before beginning a fitness routine.
I’m Rory Sutherland for Healthy Life Cycles, powered by UnitedHealthcare, and remember the path to health and wellness starts with you.
