“Hi! My name is Lynne Loveday, and I live in Warwick, Rhode Island. I was born and raised in Warwick, right here in the city, and was happy to return here and raise my son and then enjoy my granddaughter.
“I started with the state 30 years ago. What I like about the state of Rhode Island is that I am a public servant, and I love helping people. What takes a big part of my life is being a union president.
“The state of Rhode Island, with their partnership with UnitedHealthcare, created Rewards for Wellness program for state employees. In August, the wellness program was presented to the presidents, and we were asked to take it back to our memberships. There were different aspects that we were required to do, and I had promised the membership that I would do everything and participate 100 percent because that’s what I expected them to do.
“What helped me with the wellness program was, first of all, finding how unhealthy I really was. At the time, I was so busy, I didn’t pay attention. It wasn’t on my radar screen to tune into any signs I was having.
“The most serious thing that turned my life around was when I went in for my colonoscopy. I was 56 years old. The doctor had told me when I went in for just my regular medicines and that and regular checkup, that I should be getting a colonoscopy.
“But for that many years I hadn’t done it until the wellness program, and it was one of the requirements and one of the tests that I knew that my doctor wanted me to have. I learned that there was a problem and then learned later that week that it was pre-cancer that was really spreading rapidly and that it was on the phase of turning to cancer.
“When I went in for my test results, my doctor told me, ‘The Wellness Program really saved your life.’ It seems like UnitedHealth really cares about the people.
“I didn’t just participate, I learned, I took it home with me, and I implemented it into my lifestyle. I’m in an exercise program, daily I walk 3 ½ miles – that’s how I start my day. And I end my day with relaxation. I previously would collapse of exhaustion, and now I take the time.
“It’s important to me that I speak to everyone that I possibly can so that they too can take better care of themselves and possibly save their lives. I’d like everyone to feel like I do, and that’s healthy and happy – happy to be alive.
“My name is Lynne Loveday, and this is my health care success story.
