Ask the Expert: Linda Chous Checkup Frequency – UHC TV Many people wonder how often they should get their eyes checked. I get that question a lot of times, and it’s very dependent on your age and if you have any other conditions that would cause you to have to have an exam more often. Children should have their eyes examined every one to two years—starting at about actually age six months. Then, going forward while they are in school, if they are not wearing glasses, they should have their eyes checked every year or two. If they are wearing glasses, they should have their eyes checked every year to see if there are any changes going on. Adults should have their eyes checked every two to three years if they don’t wear glasses. And, we are talking about adults that are about twenty-two to forty years old. When you hit age forty, there is a good chance that you’re gonna start having problems seeing up close and you’ll start needing to have your eyes checked more often—about every one to two years at that point. You might start needing reading glasses. You also have to start worrying about are there any other problems like cataracts or glaucoma that you may not be aware of. And, eye exams can take a look at that and see if you are at risk for having any eye problems, or if you need to be concerned about something that is starting to show up. When you hit about age fifty to sixty, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked every year for a glaucoma test. And, if you have problems like high cholesterol or diabetes or high blood pressure or arthritis or things that can cause problems with your eyes as well, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked every year. And, in some cases more often, especially with diabetes. The doctor will want to see you every three to six months if there are problems that are noted. So, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked regularly—whether you wear glasses or not, or whether you have a problem seeing or not. Because many times, you can have problems that don’t cause problems with your vision but that can still be eye problems that can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. So, have your eyes checked regularly, and talk to your doctor about how often you should have your eyes checked after that.
