My name is Barbara Myrick, and I’m from Richmond, Virginia. I grew up in a small town called Emporia, Virginia, and I moved to Richmond in the 70s. I have a husband that’s into flowers and taking pictures, and I have a son.
To me, life is a joy. I’m a people person. I like working with people. I like to talk. They tell me I talk too much, but I like to talk. I like the outdoors. I just love life. I can’t get enough of it.
I had been walking, trying to lose weight walking. I broke a tendon in my heel, and I had to have surgery. A screw was put in my heel. I was allergic to it, and we had to end up taking it out. It got infected. I had MRSA. In the hospital, I was more or less quarantined because MRSA is a bad infection.
It didn’t seem to be healing as quick as I thought it would. That had me worried. You certainly realize that you can’t do everything and you need someone to do everything for you.
I was worried about work and getting back to work. I was worried about the medical expenses because I knew I was going to the doctor at least every week, and wondering if it’s going to be okay.
It just took a toll on you. Having a disability part of my plan was very important because you never know when you might need it, and the situation did come up, that I needed it.
I could continue to take care of my bills. If I’d not had the insurance, I would have been more worried, added to the stress that I already had of the surgery. I think it would have affected my healing.
UnitedHealthcare’s role was to check on me and they did it very well. I had a nurse named Yvette. She called and introduced herself as a UnitedHealthcare nurse. I was very surprised because it showed me that UnitedHealthcare cared.
If I had questions about my medicine – confused about what I should take or what is it for – instead of calling the doctor and having to wait two or three days to get an answer, I could ask her. She could also tell me about my insurance as far as what medicine was covered. or what procedures were covered, or what I could do. Yvette was my best friend at that time.
My first day back at work, I was glad and thankful that I was able to walk and everything was okay. I think I worked even better than I did before I left.
Today I feel fine. I’m very pleased with how everything went. I’m rid of the infection. I’m able to walk.
My outlook on life is different. Sometimes things happen to you for a reason. I don’t know what the reason was, but I appreciate UnitedHealthcare, the nurse online. I don’t take it for granted anymore.
My name is Barbara Myrick, and this is my health care success story.
