Ask the Expert: Maggie Gilbert After School Snacks – UHC TV So the question is “what are some good after-school snacks for kids?” Well, of course it depends on the age of your children. There are so many ideas. But if you think generally, the idea is to get a nice balance in kids after school for fuel. You don’t want to fill them up so much that they don’t eat dinner. But kids are hungry when they get home from school. They haven’t eaten for hours, since lunch. So think about a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat. And I don’t get too crazy about this myself in terms of worrying every single day about whether or not I get that balance. But over time, if you have good solid choices available, it balances itself out. So, as for a few specific ideas – think about something maybe like pita that you could fill with peanut butter and jelly and apples. That’s a great one. Or even just apple slices. My son used to love this. I’d take apple slices and put peanut butter on them. You could just serve that. And I also saw another idea, which is to take that, and sprinkle that will a little granola for a little crunch. That’s a nice filling snack that works perfectly. Another one is to have some pre-cut vegetables on hand. It takes a few minutes to do them, but really, really, really worth it. Put them in a container and put them in your refrigerator and have those on hand, and it never hurts to have a little dip with those. Kids like that, and it’s a good way to get them to eat their vegetables. Another idea is really simple. Think about something like grilled cheese, leftover pizza, a good old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – all really good ideas. Cheese sticks, some fresh fruit with that, maybe some pita chips. I’m thinking balance, I’m thinking variety, and depending on the age of the kid, keeping the quantities appropriate so that they don’t get too full, but they are fueled up. So, those are some quick ideas that I have.
